The 35th Annual San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival
(Produced by World Arts West)
World Arts West plays a crucial role in California’s cultural ecology. Every great city has important museums, operas and orchestras, but few of the world’s great cities have a World Arts West. It is hard to imagine San Francisco without it.
The greatness of San Francisco Bay Area lies in its diversity, and the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival encapsulates and celebrates that diversity better than any other event in the Bay Area. Nowhere is cultural diversity better embodied than in the Bay Area’s rich and varied dance traditions.
The thousands of artists participating in the annual San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival are the heart and soul of the San Francisco Bay Area, and serve as both cultural ambassadors and catalysts for important cross-cultural endeavors.
- Festival Dates:
June 1 – 30, 2013 (primarily at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts)
- World Arts West serves as the hub for over 450 dance companies based in Northern California that are collectively sustaining over 100 dance forms from around the world.
Alastair Macauley, The New York Times:
“What other city in the world has anything like the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival? …A glorious achievement.”
Leah Garchik, The San Francisco Chronicle:
“The aims of the Ethnic Dance Festival seem contradictory: the preservation of individual traditions and the forging of connections with other cultures. This seemingly impossible feat was accomplished right at the start of Saturday’s show- one in a series at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in June…”
Please help us spread the word to dancers and musicians in your communities:
- Auditions for 2013 Festival:
January 12 & 13 / Zellerbach Hall, UC Berkeley
January 19 & 20 / Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco
Audition Application Deadline: November 19, 2012
